AL, CCRC, SNF and RCF: What all those Elder Care Acronyms Mean

Senior housing and care communities–and Cincinnati/Dayton senior living advisors like Senior Care Partners–often use acronyms to describe the types of care, services and living arrangements available. We use this shorthand so often, we can forget everyone doesn’t know what the various acronyms stand for!
Common Cincinnati and Dayton senior housing acronyms
IL (Independent Living)
- Designed for active seniors who require little to no assistance with daily activities, these communities typically offer housekeeping, meal services and social activities.
AL (Assisted Living)
- Provides housing, meals and assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing and medication management. Residents maintain a level of independence but have access to support.
CCRC (Continuing Care Retirement Community)
- A comprehensive community offering multiple various levels of care on a single campus, allowing residents to age in place as their needs change.
SNF (Skilled Nursing Facility)
- Provides 24/7 medical care and rehabilitation services for individuals recovering from surgery, illness or requiring long-term care for chronic conditions.
MC (Memory Care)
- A specialized type of assisted living or nursing care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. These communities are designed for safety and cognitive support.
RCF (Residential Care Facility)
- A general term for facilities offering personal care services in a homelike setting.
LTC (Long-Term Care)
- Refers to services provided to individuals with chronic illnesses or disabilities who require assistance over an extended period, often in nursing homes or assisted living facilities.
HUD (Housing and Urban Development)
- Refers to government-subsidized housing programs designed to make senior housing more affordable.
PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly)
- A Medicare and Medicaid program that helps seniors receive medical care, social services and support in their homes.
ADL (Activities of Daily Living)
- Refers to basic self-care such as eating, dressing, bathing, toileting and mobility. These are used to determine the level of care a senior may need.
IADL (Instrumental Activities of Daily Living)
- Refers to more complex daily tasks, such as managing finances, preparing meals, using transportation or taking medications.
RCAC (Residential Care Apartment Complex)
- A type of senior housing that combines independent living with some supportive services like housekeeping and meals.
HHA (Home Health Agency)
- Agencies that provide in-home medical and personal care services for seniors who prefer to remain in their homes.
AAC (Adult Active Community)
- Communities designed for seniors (usually 55+) who are fully independent but seek a social and activity-oriented environment.
NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community)
- Communities where a large proportion of residents have aged in place over time, allowing seniors to naturally form a supportive community.
Healthcare-related acronyms used in senior housing in southwest Ohio
HHA (Home Health Aide)
- Provides in-home assistance with ADLs and medical needs under supervision.
CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant)
- Provides hands-on care to residents in assisted living or skilled nursing facilities.
LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse)
- Offers basic nursing care and often works in assisted living or skilled nursing environments.
RN (Registered Nurse)
- Provides a higher level of medical care, often supervising care in skilled nursing facilities or home health agencies.
OT (Occupational Therapy)
- Focuses on helping seniors regain skills for daily living and independence.
PT (Physical Therapy)
- Aims to improve mobility, strength and balance, often for rehabilitation purposes.
DME (Durable Medical Equipment)
- Medical equipment provided to seniors to aid mobility or other needs, such as walkers, wheelchairs, or hospital beds.
